The odds on Chris Wood joining Burnley this month have been slashed to 6/4, according to bookmakers.

Sky Bet priced the Premier League club at 6/4 on Thursday afternoon to sign Wood, 25, before the transfer window cut-off on 31 August.

Burnley are now huge favourites in the betting ahead of fellow top-flight clubs Huddersfield (14/1), West Brom, Stoke (both 18/1), Brighton and Newcastle United (both 20/1).

Sean Dyche’s side were not in the running to sign Wood at the end of May, when Stoke were 5/2 favourites to sign him, ahead of West Ham, Swansea, Southampton and West Brom.

The change in the market come after it emerged that Burnley have tabled a bid worth up to £20million for the New Zealand international.

Wood had the best season of his career last season as he topped the second-tier scoring charts with 27 goals, and plundered 30 in all competitions.

OPINION

It is little wonder Burnley are pushing so hard to sign Wood. They are in desperate need for a proven scorer after selling Andre Gray to Watford last week for £18million. Like Gray, Wood is a natural spearhead with a knack for being in the right place at the right time and who knows how to find the back of the net. Dyvhe has cash to burn, but Leeds are not in desperate need of the cash, and they have no alternative scorer in place should they lose Wood. Fans would be destroyed if their main man was sold in the next fortnight, as it would surely mean the end of their promotion hopes.
