Alan Shearer could not hide his dismay on Twitter as Newcastle suffered a 1-0 defeat to Huddersfield on Sunday afternoon.

Australia international Aaron Mooy scored the only goal of the game with a superb curling effort into the top corner of Rob Elliot’s goal, just a few minutes after the half-time break.

Newcastle legend Shearer was unimpressed with the performance as he posted his verdict on his personal Twitter account, claiming it is going to be a “long, hard season”.

The loss to David Wagner’s fellow Premier League new boys comes after the Toon were easily beaten 2-0 by Tottenham at St. James’ Park last Sunday.

Manager Rafa Benitez is becoming increasingly frustrated on Tyneside as he struggles to bring in any new transfers with owner Mike Ashley keeping a tight stronghold on the Newcastle coffers.

The former Liverpool and Real Madrid manager is expected to make numerous changes to his side to face Nottingham Forest on Wednesday, before the Toon face West Ham on Saturday.

OPINION

Newcastle simply must spend money on three new players in order to boost the Toon’s chances of reviving their bid to remain in the Premier League. A new centre-back, a number 10 and a winger are seriously needed at St. James’ Park this summer, with Newcastle’s lack of creativity massively on show against David Wagner’s side. If they can spend around £30-£40million on three big players in each position, then Newcastle will steer clear of relegation by adding renewed optimism and top-tier quality to their side. Shearer’s concerns will evaporate and the Toon will reinstate their reputation as one of the biggest clubs in the country.
