John Terry has been confirmed as the Aston Villa captain and will wear the armband during his debut against Shrewsbury Town on Saturday.

36-year-old Terry joined Villa on a one-year-deal at the beginning of July after he left Chelsea as a free agent and has almost immediately been appointed skipper.

The former England international spent 22 years at Stamford Bridge after he climbed through the ranks from the club’s academy and became the club’s most successful captain.

During his entire time with the London Blues Terry won the Premier League and the FA cup five times each, in addition to the Champions League, Europa League trophy, and the League Cup three times.

Terry has since moved on to join Steve Bruce’s squad at Villa Park and will be appearing as the new captain for the first time this weekend.

Aston Villa announced the news on their official Twitter account on Saturday.

James Chester formerly captained Villa throughout the previous season, but Terry will take over for the upcoming 2017/18 campaign.

In Steve Bruce’s squad for the friendly against Shrewsbury Town Sam Johnstone is set to return as Villa keeper after signing a new season-long loan-deal on Friday.

The Championship boss has made just two recruits so far during the transfer window and will be hoping that his side will contend for top flight promotion with the help from their new captain and keeper.
