Northampton are set to hold talks with Rangers midfielder Matt Crooks ahead of a transfer back to England, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper claims that the Light Blues have accepted a bid from the League One side and rejected a lower offer from Scunthorpe.

Crooks spent last season on loan in Graham Alexander’s Scunthorpe squad, and the English manager made it no secret that he was keen to make the deal permanent.

The 23-year-old only signed for the Light Blues last summer in a deal from Accrington Stanley, but only managed to earn three first-team appearances for the club before he was shipped out on loan to Scunthorpe.

He impressed in League One with the Iron during his temporary spell and proved a pivotal part in helping them reach the play-off spots as he made 12 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and supplying one assist.

However Crooks was struck down with an injury just before the league season ended and wasn’t able to help Scunthorpe get past Millwall in the play-off semi-finals, where they lost over two legs.

Pedro Caixinha could be looking to recoup some of the money that has been splurged on a host of new arrivals this summer.

With Carlos Pena, Ryan Jack and Graham Dorrans all arriving, it would be near impossible for Crooks to be able to push for a spot in the Portuguese manager’s first-team plans for next season.
