Celtic warn Armstrong to be more realistic

Talks are “likely” to resume between Celtic and Stuart Armstrong over a new deal at the club, according to the Scottish Sun.

But, the Glasgow giants have also warned the 25-year-old, who is attracting Premier League duo Brighton and Southampton that they will not break their wage budget for him and that himself and his agent “will need to be more realistic with their demands”.

It is said that the Celtic hierarchy are willing to offer a wage rise alongside an extension to the midfielder, who has one-year remaining on his current contract.

However, it is also reported that they believe they have so far made a fair offer to the two-time capped Scotland international.

Armstrong initially made the switch to Parkhead in January 2015 alongside Gary Mackay-Steven from Dundee United.

He had a difficult first year and a half at the club with Ronny Deila using him as a left-winger.

But, after Brendan Rodgers’ appointment last summer he was placed into the centre of the park where he has since excelled and last season he returned 17 goals and seven assists in 47 encounters in all competitions.

Celtic will now be hoping that they can keep hold of a key player, but his contract situation could force the club’s hand.
