Tottenham are reportedly set to hand Vincent Janssen a second chance ahead of the new season and will be making a crucial mistake in doing so.

The Daily Mail claim that Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino wants to keep the 23-year-old striker and give him the chance to rectify his disappointing first season in English football.

However, it will come at a cost as the report details that it will cool any attempts to sign a new forward in the summer window.

That leaves the north London club with Harry Kane and Janssen as their two recognised strikers ahead of the new campaign, while versatile attacker Heung-Min Son can also lead the line.

Spurs originally paid £17million for Janssen last summer from AZ Alkmaar and the Holland international struggled to settle at the club.

The target man scored just six goals in 38 appearances last season, with only two of them coming in the Premier League.

He may deserve a second year to prove his worth, but it comes at a major cost as the club feel he is enough to support talisman Kane.

Janssen has not yet shown enough to suggest he can fill in if Kane gets a serious injury and ideally Spurs must look to bring in a third forward option.

Pochettino’s side want to be competitive in both Europe and domestically in the new season, but definitely look short of natural forward options and a couple of injuries could unhinge them.

Janssen showed in the Dutch league that he can be prolific in front of goal, scoring 32 goals in 49 appearances in the 2015/16 campaign.

Spurs have ambitions to win silverware for the first time under Pochettino and the Argentinian boss is a highly popular character at the club.

However, solely relying on misfiring Janssen as a second-choice option will heap huge pressure on the player and could turn out to be a major downfall if Kane is sidelined for an extended period of time.
