Chris Sutton has offered some optimism for the Rangers support after a bleak week, stating that Bruno Alves is a very good signing for them.

However, he also believes the 35-year-old centre-back veteran will be questioning his decision on making the move to Ibrox.

Manager Pedro Caixinha has overhauled his squad this summer, bringing in as many as nine players, including a couple of high profile names in Graham Dorrans and Alves.

However, neither featured in the club’s Europa League matches against Progres Niederkorn, which ended in a 2-1 aggregate defeat and while Sutton believes they are good additions for the Ibrox club he has also told that they must now be wondering what they have left themselves in for.

“Bruno Alves is going to be a huge signing for Rangers. He wasn’t a part of that shambles on Tuesday night and neither was Graham Dorrans who has also come in as a decent signing,” wrote Sutton in his column for the Daily Record.

“You wonder what the two of them now think they’ve let themselves in for. A player of Alves’s pedigree must be questioning whether he’s made the right move given all that’s been going on.”

Alves’ career has seen him play for such country giants as Porto, Zenit Saint Petersburg and Cagliari, where he has won the Primeier Liga four times, Russian Premier League twice and Super Lig once.

He would have been a signing that wouldn’t have looked out of place in a pre-demotion Rangers team as the Ibrox giants were always competing for the Premiership title.

However, with Celtic’s dominance and last season’s poor results it is felt that there will need much improvement if Alves is to add to his trophy haul in Glasgow next season.
