Dean Windass has defended son Josh from critics after Rangers Europa League knockout and believes the fan base are hiding from the real problems at the club.

The Glasgow giants suffered humiliation on Tuesday evening after they were defeated 2-0 in Luxembourg against minnows Progres Niederkorn, resulting in a 2-1 aggregate defeat for Pedro Caixinha’s men after only managing a 1-0 win at Ibrox last Thursday evening.

Many members of the playing staff came in for criticism from the famous Gers support and that included Windass, who was limited to just 30 minutes across both legs.

His father Dean did however take exception to his son being criticised and on his personal Twitter account on Wednesday afternoon the former Hull forward wrote that people were “papering over the cracks” by putting the blame on the midfielder.

Windass was highly thought of in England where he played for League Two club Accrington and this brought Rangers to bring him in last summer after agreeing a pre-contract deal with the 23-year-old alongside teammate Matt Crooks.

However, the attacking midfielder has had a difficult time in Glasgow so far and he was also often criticised by the fan base in his debut season at the club which saw him return five assists and one goal in 27 outings in all competitions.

He will now be hoping to push on in the upcoming campaign with three years remaining on his contract.
