Celtic captain Scott Brown is a doubt for their Champions League qualifying clash with Linfield after limping out of a friendly tie against Shamrock Rovers.

The 32-year-old central midfielder left the pitch after just 32 minutes after suffering what appeared to be an ankle injury, as Celtic went on to hammer the Republic of Ireland side 9-0.

Manager Brendan Rodgers will be hoping that he recovers in time for Friday’s match away at Northern Irish side Linfield as they hope to avoid a repeat of Old Firm rivals Rangers’ shock defeat to the underdogs in Europe.

However, he says that he is hopeful it is not too serious, and will monitor his situation ahead of Fridya’s fixture.

He told Celtic TV on the club’s official website: “His achilles was a little bit sore and we just need to asses that over the next couple of days.

“Nothing too serious I don’t think, but we will see how that is.”

If Brown is ruled out he will be the second big name missing from the side, after Dedryck Boyata was ruled out for up to three months thanks to ruptured knee ligaments.

However, Rodgers could welcome back striker Moussa Dembele to the starting XI after the youngster started and scored one of the nine goals on his return from injury, with his last appearance coming back in April.

Brown would have been thankful that he was able to enjoy an injury free 2016/17 season, having been plagued with setbacks in the previous campaign.

Knee injuries kept him out of 17 games during the middle of the season, while a hamstring strain saw him miss the final three fixtures.

However it appears this campaign has started with a blow for the 53-time-capped Scotland international, and he will be hoping to recover quickly in order to be fully fit ahead of the new season.
