West Ham United defender Angelo Ogbonna has agreed a new contract at the club, it has been confirmed.

The Premier League outfit announced on their official club website and Twitter account on Friday afternoon that the 29-year-old had put pen-to-paper on a new five-year-deal.

Ogbonna moved to the London Stadium from Italian giants Juventus back in the summer of 2015, and has since been a valuable member of the first-team squad.

The 13-time Italy international made 26 appearances in all competitions for West Ham during the 2016-17 campaign, but played just one game between February and May due to a knee injury.

The centre-back had struggled with a long-term injury problem for much of the season, but had played through the pain in order to help his side through a difficult spell of form in the Premier League.

Slaven Bilic’s side found themselves teetering towards a relegation battle at several different stages of the season, and Ogbonna was determined to see his side to safety before undergoing surgery.

However, after West Ham announced the signing of defender Jose Fonte from Southampton in January, it was revealed that Ogbonna would miss the remainder of the season to deal with his serious knee problem.

But he recovered quicker than initially planned, and he was able to make a return for the final game of the season against Burnley, playing the full 90 minutes as West Ham ran out 2-1 winners against Burnley.

The Hammers suffered from an array of defensive issues throughout the previous campaign, and Bilic will be delighted to see one of his most reliable performers commit his long-term future to the club.
