Tottenham Hotspur are close to signing Estudiantes ace Juan Foyth after earmarking him as an understudy to Toby Alderweireld, according to a Sky Sports News report.

The broadcaster claims in a report on their website that Spurs are currently in negotiations with Estudiantes club president Juan Sebastian Veron over a £8million move for the 19-year-old centre-back.

It is said Veron has been in London for talks over the last few days and should a deal come to fruition it will be subject to a work permit.

The report states Foyth is keen on a move to Europe, and should he move to Spurs he is expected to link up with the club’s Under-23s outfit, where he would serve as an understudy to Alderweireld given his similarities with the senior star and one of the outstanding centre-backs in the Premier League.

The 19-year-old broke into the senior set up at Estudiantes in January of this year, and he made four league appearances in the latter half of the 2016-17 season.

Foyth has been capped on 12 occasions by Argentina Under-20s, and he featured in all three matches of their Under-20s World Cup campaign in May of this year.

The Sky Sports News report also claims that Spurs are ready to sell Kevin Wimmer this summer if the price is right, so Foyth could potentially seen as a replacement for him, as well as a back up for Alderweireld.
