Tottenham are eyeing a move for Sporting CP’s midfielder William Carvalho to replace Eric Dier this summer, according to A Bola.

The Portuguese newspaper claim on their website that the North London side view the Portuguese international as worthy of filling Dier’s boots if he was to make a move to Manchester United.

They also report that while Sporting have a £39million (€45million) release clause in the 25-year-old’s contract, which is set to expire in 2020, they would be willing to negotiate a deal of no less than £26million (€30million).

Carvalho, who primarily operates as a midfield enforcer but can also slot in at centre-back, has established himself as a key member of his side’s squad, making 155 appearances and scoring 10 goals having risen through the youth ranks at the club.

He is also an experienced international, having made 37 caps for Portugal, his debut coming as a substitute in his country’s 3-2 World Cup qualifying victory away to Sweden back in 2013.

He also appeared in all but two of their seven games at Euro 2016, playing every minute in the final as they managed to defeat hosts France and pick up the trophy.

Last season saw him continue as a key performer in the Sporting midfield, turning out 43 times across all competitions, being named captain on six occasions and only missing two league games, both through suspension.

His arrival at North London would mean extra competition for the likes of Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama in the Tottenham midfield.
