Newcastle are looking to secure a deal worth £3million for striker Daryl Murphy amid interest from Championship side Norwich City, according to the Northern Echo.

The newspaper claim on their website that the Canaries are hopeful of doing a deal with the Magpies for the 34-year-old forward, but say that the Tyneside club are looking to recoup the money they spent on him to bring him from Ipswich almost 12 months ago.

The 25-time-capped Republic of Ireland international was brought in to St James’ Park to offer some Championship experience following Newcastle’s relegation, and he performed admirably when called upon.

In his 15 Championship appearances for the club, only 11 of which saw him in the staring XI, he fired home five goals and grabbed three assists to help the Magpies secure promotion, and the second tier title, at the first time of asking.

However, ahead of their Premier League return, Murphy has been told by manager Rafael Benitez that he is free to leave the club as he is not expected to play a role in the first team next season.

It is expected that he will return to the Championship, where he has scored 82 goals in 274 appearances for a selection of clubs, and Norwich will be hoping that, if he signs, he can help fire them to promotion as he did Newcastle.
