Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle says that he knows the club must bring improve with new arrivals and that he is relishing the competition.

The Magpies have only completed two deals so far this summer, with Christian Atsu joining permanently after his impressive loan deal last summer, while they also managed to snap up Eibar defender Florian Lejeune.

The Chronicle report that the club have submitted a £10million bid for their top target Jacob Murphy of Norwich City, but their appears to be little other news for fans to get excited about.

However, supporters were able to welcome the return of first team action, with the Magpies securing a 2-1 friendly victory over Hearts on Friday night.

Dwight Gayle bagged a brace to ensure victory, demonstrating the goal scoring touch he showed last season to fire the Magpies back to the Premier League, and the 26-year-old says that the team must bring in new faces to improve the side.

He told the Chronicle: “I know the club need to bring in players and we need to improve.

“I’m all for new signings and I’m looking forward to the season. It will pull everybody in the right direction.

“The new players are joining in well. We’ll go for it and see what we can do.”

Gayle was Newcastle’s star man and top scorer last season with 23 goals, all of which came in the Championship, and is one of three centre forward options available to boss Rafael Benitez, with attacking midfielder Ayoze Perez also able operate up top.

However that is likely to become two, with Daryl Murphy heavily linked with a move away from the club, while Newcastle icon Malcolm Macdonald has urged the club to offload Serbian target man Aleksandar Mitrovic.
