Manchester United have begun discussions with midfielder Ander Herrera over an improved contract, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper claim on their website that the Reds are keen to tie the 27-year-old down to the club amid interest from Spanish sides Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

They state that Herrera is currently on wages of £100,000-a-week but are willing to increase that to £150,000-a-week in order to reward him for his recent fine form, a move which will keep him contracted at the club until 2021.

His current deal is set to expire at the end of the upcoming season, although United have an optional clause which could see them extend it for an additional year.

The news of a new contract comes just a day after Sport reported that Reds boss Jose Mourinho blocked a move from Barcelona after they approached United over a possible transfer.

Herrera has established himself as a key player at the club since arriving in a £30million move from Athletic Bilbao in 2014, making 122 appearances across all competitions, scoring 15 goals and providing 22 assists.

Last campaign he was named United’s player of the year for his role in securing the club both the League Cup and the Europa League, which saw him turn out 50 times in both league and cup fixtures.

His spiky style of play has made him a firm favourite among supporters, although it has not always endeared him to opponents.

He also managed to earn an international call-up last season, making his debut for Spain in November 2016 as the first of his two caps for his country.
