Robbie Fowler reveals that he is “baffled” by Romelu Lukaku’s decision to leave Everton to join Premier League rivals Manchester United this summer.

This comes after the Manchester club recently announced on their official Twitter account that they have agreed a fee with the Toffees to sign the 24-year-old striker.

Writing in his column for the Daily Mirror, the former Liverpool man admits that he was shocked to hear the news as the Belgian has failed to impress United boss Jose Mourinho in the past but he does believe that Lukaku will deliver the goods at Old Trafford next season.

“I have to admit I’m baffled by Romelu Lukaku’s decision to join Manchester United,” he said

“It’s a funny one, why would he want to go and play for a manager who has already twice deemed him not good enough, which is exactly what Jose Mourinho has done, whatever way he wraps it up.

“Ok, I get he’ll say he’s improved, I get he is no doubt a better player, but really? It’s a strange one for me, especially as this deal looks suspiciously like it is a last minute deal.

“I do believe he’ll score goals too, which is the bottom line on why they’ve paid so much for Lukaku – and no matter which way you look at it, it’s a helluva price for any player, let alone someone who still has quite a bit to prove at the highest level.”

Fowler is not the only person to express his doubts over the potential move as his former teammate Michael Owen revealed on his personal Twitter account that he thought it was an “odd situation”.

Mourinho was Lukaku’s manager during his second spell at Stamford Bridge but he decided to move the Belgian on to Everton on two separate occasions as the striker struggled to get much first-team action.

Lukaku has since become one of the most talent players in the Premier League and he has demonstrated his goalscoring prowess at Goodison Park, notching up a total of 87 goals for Everton.

United will be hopeful that the Belgian can continue to improve and further develop his game at Old Trafford next season.
