Manchester United have secured a loan deal for young defender Regan Poole which will see him join Northampton Town for the upcoming season, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper report on their website that the 19-year-old centre back will link up with former manager Justin Edinburgh, who handed Poole his senior debut as a 16-year-old while during his time at Newport County.

He joined United from Newport in the summer of 2015 after impressing on trial a year earlier, as the Reds beat off interest from rivals Liverpool, who had taken him on a one week trial, to secure his signing.

The defender, who has three appearances for Wales’ U21 side, broke into Louis van Gaal’s first team during his first season at the club, making his debut as a substitute in United’s 5-1 victory over FC Midtjylland in the Europa League round of 32 stage.

United currently have a wealth of experience at the heart of their defence, with Jose Mourinho bringing in Swedish international Victor Lindelof from Benfica to join Chris Smalling, Eric Bailly, Marcus Rojo and Phil Jones as his senior options.

Despite their involvement in the Champions League, and as such more fixtures next season, it appears that Poole will be shipped out in order to gain more first team experience to aid his development
