Manchester United could turn to a move for 21-year-old Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl after being frustrated with deals for their top targets, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claim on their website that boss Jose Mourinho shortlisted Tottenham’s Eric Dier and Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic as his first choice signings in his hunt for a defensive midfielder, but the Reds have failed to secure a deal with either.

Spurs do not want to sell England international Dier this summer and while Chelsea would be willing to let Serbian star Matic depart this summer, but they will only do so when they have secured his replacement in the shape of Monaco’s Tiemoue Bakayoko.

As such, United appear to have turned their attention to five-time-capped German international Weigl, who is currently ruled out of action with a broken ankle, and is not expected to return to fitness until the middle of September.

The midfield enforcer, who is contracted until 2021, joined Dortmund in the summer of 2015, and has gone on to make 94 appearances for the German giants, scoring a single goal.

Last season saw him play a key role in the centre of the park, as he made 43 appearances across all competitions, including nine Champions League starts, before he suffered the ankle injury which saw him miss the final two matches of the season.
