Lucas Leiva could be set to end his lengthy spell at Liverpool after Lazio tabled a £5million bid, according to a reliable journalist.

Times correspondent Paul Joyce claimed on his personal Twitter account on Friday that the Merseysiders have received the offer from the Serie A club for the long-serving midfielder.

He may now been omitted from the Liverpool squad for their pre-season friendly against Wigan Athletic on Friday night.

Liverpool take to the DW Stadium for their final domestic friendly of the summer, before heading out to Hong Kong for the Premier League Asia Trophy.

Lucas, 30, has been linked with leaving Liverpool in recent transfer windows but has stayed to remain a key first-team squad player, racking up 32 matches in all competitions last season despite not always being a regular starter.

He has spent the last 10 years at Liverpool and accumulated 346 first-team appearances.

He remained a first-team squad player last season and played in 32 matches in all competitions despite not always being a regular starter.

It has been widely reported that Lucas has been told he can leave Liverpool this summer and he appeared to wave farewell to the Anfield faithful on the final match of the 2016/17 season against Middlesbrough when he was brought on for a late substitute appearance.

Lucas’ current contract at Liverpool is the subject of confusion but it appears his appearances last season triggered an extension which ties him to the club for another 12 months.
