Leicester hijack Everton bid with the promise of higher wages

Leicester have hijacked Everton’s bid to sign Swansea’s Gylfi Sigurdsson and Tottenham are also firmly in the race, according to a report in the Daily Mail.

The newspaper revealed on their website that Craig Shakespeare’s side had offered the 27-year-old attacker a £125,000-a-week wage in order to tempt the Iceland international to the King Power Stadium this summer.

The Daily Mail claims that Toffees manager Ronald Koeman is still leading in the race to secure Sigurdsson but his former club Tottenham are also keeping tabs on his situation.

It is said that Leicester’s mega-money wage promise is higher than Everton’s offer, but a move to the Merseyside club is still attractive to the Icelandic attacking midfielder.

This report follows a previous story from BBC Sport which claimed that Leicester had already made a bid of £40 million for the star, but it was rejected after the Swans slapped a £50 million price tag on the former Spurs ace.

The 27-year-old joined Swansea from the north London club in 2014 for a fee near to £9 million.

Sigurdsson has shown his versatility since moving to the Liberty Stadium where played on both wings, as an attacking midfielder and also as a centre-forward.

In addition to his ability to play in a number of roles on the pitch Sigurdsson showed his leadership skills when he captained the Swans twice last season against Watford and also against Stoke City.

His skills are greatly admired by Ronald Koeman and the Toffees boss will undoubtably want to recruit the Iceland star over the coming weeks despite the price battle.

The Goodison Park manager hasn’t shied away from spending big this summer after making Jordan Pickford England’s most expensive goalkeeper after paying £30 million for the star, as well as paying the same fee for Michael Keane.
