Chelsea in talks to land Vanoli

Chelsea are in negotiations with Italy assistant manager Paolo Vanoli about joining their backroom staff as Antonio Conte continues his overhaul behind the scenes, according to the Mail.

The newspaper claim that the Premier League champions want Vanoli, 44, to be a member of their coaching team that is being reshaped following the exit of former number two Steve Holland.

The Mail report that manager Conte has already brought in Italian Davide Mazzotta as a scout to analyse the opposition and work on their video analysis, rather than as a direct replacement as assistant coach.

It is said that another Italian in Vanoli, who also coaches Italy Under-19s, is also in line to join as Conte brings in technical help from his homeland ahead of his second season at Chelsea.

Former left-back Vanoli scored the wining goal for Parma in the 1999 UEFA Cup final and is set for his second British experience after playing for Rangers from the summer of 2003 to January 2005.

Capped twice by Italy he has gone on to establish himself as a coach within the national youth set-up, working with the Under-17s, Under-18s and Under-19s while also working as technical coach for the senior Italian team alongside Gian Piero Ventura.

The prospective hiring could also be interpreted as a way of appeasing Conte after he was reportedly frustrated with the club’s actions in this summer’s transfer market.

The Telegraph claim that there was tension between him and the Chelsea board following their inability to prevent Romelu Lukaku from joining Manchester United.
