Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw has vowed to prove himself to Jose Mourinho in the upcoming season following a series of injuries.

The 22-year-old has had a somewhat turbulent relationship with Mourinho over the past year after the United manager commented that the defender didn’t have the level of intelligence to play at top level football.

In addition to criticism from his manager, Shaw suffered from a string of injuries throughout the previous season where he ultimately missed a total of 22 United games due to a groin injury and an ankle ligament problem which will see him miss the opening games of the 2017/18 campaign.

Shaw slipped down in Mourinho’s pecking order behind fellow left-back Daley Blind last season but the seven-capped England international is ready to prove his worth to the Portuguese manager.

The former Southampton defender spoke after his club’s 5-2 victory over LA Galaxy during their United States pre-season tour and was quoted by The Times: “I feel that this is my season to prove myself and I’m feeling in good shape,

“I want to show everyone that I believe in myself and show the manager that.”

When speaking about his relationship with the manager, Shaw was quoted by The Times as saying: “He asks how I am, how it is going and he keeps on top of how we are and to see how far along we [Shaw and Ashley Young] are.”

Shaw’s comments follow a story in The Mirror which recently revealed that Jose Mourinho is prepared to show his faith in the Englishman and could make him the club’s first-choice left-back once he has recovered from injury.
