Nottingham Forest assistant manager David Weir has heaped huge praise on the club’s new attacking duo Jason Cummings and Barrie McKay following their performances in the opening pre-season match.

The Championship side faced Cuban outfit Deportivo Saprissa on Sunday in a behind-closed door match in the United States and Forest managed to secure a 2-1 victory with Cummings netting his first goal for his new club.

McKay also featured in a game that was played over three half-an-hour periods in Florida.

Speaking to the club’s official website following the match, Wier expressed his delight at how the new players performed and believes that both men can improve with more game time under their belt.

“Coming out to Florida they get to know their teammates personally but this also gives them a chance to know them as players on the pitch,” he said.

“They have integrated into the group, have been accepted and they have things to learn about the way we do things.

“They both did really well and it was great for Jason to get a goal and Barrie showed his quality as well.

“They are both young players and both have a lot of development to do and can get better but they are really good players as well.”

Both Cummings and McKay signed in the summer transfer window from SPL sides Hibernian and Rangers respectively.

Cummings was influential in helping Hibs achieve automatic promotion back to the top tier of Scottish football as he notched up 23 goals and seven assists in all competitions last season.

McKay was a first-team regular at Ibrox last season and he impressed with his performances, scoring six goals and providing 11 assists in all competitions.

Forest will be hopeful that both attacking players can hit the ground running and help them improve on their disappointing Championship campaign last season where they finished in 21st place.
