Arsenal are currently holding discussions with former goalkeeper Jens Lehmann about rejoining the club as a coach, according to the Times.

The newspaper claims that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is looking to reshape his backroom staff this summer and he believes that the 47-year-old German would be the perfect fit.

The North London club have already added a new member to the backroom staff as Darren Burgess was appointed the new performance fitness coach and he is reportedly set to start this week.

The report claims that Lehmann will be offered the role as first-team coach instead of becoming the new goalkeeping coach, a position which is currently held by Gerry Peyton, who is set to remain at the club even if the German decides to accept the offer.

It is said that a number of Arsenal supporters are unhappy with the current backroom team as they feel that a strong voice is needed to challenge Wenger’s authority in the dressing room.

The former Germany international was a very popular player during his spell in North London as he was the man between the sticks as the Gunners secured their last Premier League title in the 2003-04 season.

Lehmann , who the Times report is an extrovert character and powerful presence, was instrumental in helping Arsenal remain unbeaten throughout the entire league campaign that season.

The goalkeeper was also the hero in the 2005 FA Cup final as he saved a Paul Scholes penalty to ensure vcitory for the Gunners against Manchester United at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

Lehmann made a total of 168 appearances for Arsenal and kept 80 clean sheets in the process.
