Serie A new boys SPAL are in “ongoing negotiations” with Leeds United over a possible summer move for Marco Silvestri, according to a reliable journalist.

Sky Sports Italy correspondent Gianluca Di Marzio, who is renowned as a transfer expert, has claimed on his personal website that SPAL are in the market for a new goalkeeper following their promotion to the Italian top-flight.

It is said they will also attempt to re-sign Alex Meret on loan from Udinese ahead of the 2017-18 campaign, after he impressed at the club last term, but they are also in talks with Leeds about a move for Silvestri.

Silvestri, 26, played second fiddle to Robert Green at Elland Road in the 2016-17 season, making only six cup appearances.

The Italian shot-stopper joined the Yorkshire giants from Italian outfit Chievo in the summer of 2014 for £425,000, and he has since played 98 league and cup games for the club.

Silvestri was capped once by Italy Under-21s, making his debut in a 6-5 friendly win over Mexico in June 2011.

SPAL finished as champions of Serie B last term, ending the season four points clear of their nearest competitor Verona.

The club is set to compete in the Italian top-flight for the first time since it was refounded in 2012 and manager Leonardo Semplici is looking to strengthen his squad over the summer.
