Serie A club Sampdoria are interested in signing Aston Villa defender Jordan Amavi this summer, according to Sky Sports journalist.

Sky Sports Italy correspondent Gianluca Di Marzio has reported on his personal website that the Italian side are looking for new recruits in defence and they are keen on bringing the 23-year-old full-back to the club.

Sampdoria enjoyed an impressive season in the Italian top flight last season as they finished in 10th position- a serious improvement on their 2015-16 campaign where they spent the majority of the season fighting against relegation.

The Genoa-based side proved to be a very hard team to break down last season as they only conceded 55 goals, the sixth best defensive record in the entire league.

Amavi was a first-team regular during his second season at Villa Park, making a total of 36 appearances in all competitions and providing one assist from the full-back position.

The Frenchman was part of a very resilient defensive set-up as Villa only conceded 48 league goals last season – the fifth best defensive record in the Championship.

However, Steve Bruce’s side were unable to mount a serious challenge on the playoffs as they finished in 13th place.

Sampdoria will need to spend big if they want to sign the French defender this summer as his contract with the Championship club ends in June 2020.
