Mexican international duo Carlos Pena and Eduardo Herrera have been granted work permits ahead of their proposed moves to Rangers, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper report that the two players have cleared the final hurdle in the transfer process, and could be set to join up with their new Rangers team-mates next week after undergoing medicals and agreeing three-year deals.

Rangers had been forced to wait for work permit clearances, with a three-man tribunal panel first required to green light the transfers before the Scottish club could make further progress.

The Glasgow giants were under no illusions that both Herrera and Pena would pass the tribunal assessment, despite the pair failing to meet work permit criteria that require players to have featured in 75 per cent of their national team’s fixtures in the past two years.

However, it is understood that both players have now passed through the work-permit process without any complications, and the emphatic tribunal decision could allow them to complete their moves to the club in the next week.

Rangers are set to spend a combined £4million to land the two Mexican players, with Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha making the most of his connections through his former role as manager of Mexican outfit Santos Laguna.

Pena, 27, would become the second midfield signing made by Caixinha this summer, following the arrival of Aberdeen playmaker Ryan Jack.

Meanwhile, 28-year-old forward Herrera will add more firepower to Rangers’ attacking ranks, which are currently led by veteran Kenny Miller.

Caixinha has also moved to bring in Portuguese trio Bruno Alves, Fabio Cardoso and Dalcio, who have all joined up with the first-team squad at Auchenhowie for pre-season training.
