Leeds United have had an approach for Espanyol manager Quique Sanchez Flores rejected, according to a reliable journalist.

Radio Yorkshire correspondent Joe Rawson claimed on his personal Twitter account on Wednesday that the Championship club had made a concerted push to make Flores their next permanent manager.

Leeds have been on the hunt for a new manager for the last fortnight, following Garry Monk’s decision to quit the club after just one year in charge at Elland Road.

Monk was locked in talks with owner Andrea Radrizzani over a new 12-month contract extension, only for the 38-year-old to hand in his resignation after a breakdown in discussions.

A host of high-profile names have been linked with the vacant position at Leeds, including former Watford manager Flores, who is about to enter the second year of his three-year contract with La Liga outfit Espanyol.

As Leeds fans continue to fret over the identity of their next manager, Rawson has revealed that the club have made an approach to prize the 52-year-old Spaniard away from his current position.

However, Rawson did also add that Leeds has failed in their attempts, with Espanyol rejecting their approach in emphatic fashion.

Meanwhile, former Sky Sports writer Peter O’Rourke, who contributes to ESPN FC, has claimed on Twitter that Leeds are set to appoint a new manager before the end of the current week.

But it now appears clear that Flores is no longer in the running as the long-awaited appointment looms.
