Hibernian are set to complete the signing of Celtic defender Efe Ambrose on a permanent basis, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper report that the 28-year-old has agreed a two-year deal that will see him extended his stay at Easter Road, following a successful loan spell.

Ambrose had fallen out-of-favour at Celtic under manager Brendan Rodgers last season, making just two appearances for the club during the first-half of the season.

But after being starved of first-team opportunities, Rodgers granted the Nigerian international defender a loan move to Hibernian in the January window to seek more regular action.

He madeĀ a lasting impression at the Scottish club, and Neil Lennon has since swooped to make his move permanent, with the Scottish Sun claiming Hibernian are “set to confirm” the deal.

The centre-back, who is out of contract at Parkhead next month, is understood to have had offers from France, but has opted to continue his development under Neil Lennon after the faith he put in him last term.

Lennon holds Ambrose in high regard, and has taken a liking to his composure, experience and versatility, over the course of his short spell at the club.

Hibernian had made him a priority signing after they sealed promotion to the Scottish Premiership ahead of next season, and while official confirmation of the transfer appears imminent, the transfer itself will not go ahead until July 1.

Ambrose made 169 appearances in all competitions during his five-year spell at Celtic, contributing six goals and 10 assists, but his association with the 48-time Scottish champions is all but over.
