Celtic icon Tom Boyd admits the club are making a positive move by entering the loan market for new players this summer.

The Hoops struck gold with the signing of Manchester City youngster Patrick Roberts on an 18-month loan deal, which expired at the end of the 2016-17 season, but a permanent move appears out of the question.

Roberts contributed 17 goals and 21 assists during his loan spell at Parkhead, and Boyd believes the club got a very good deal by pursuing the loan market route.

Celtic have recently been linked with moves for a number of other Premier League players on temporary deals ahead of the new season, including Chelsea attacker Tammy Abraham.

The Scottish Sun claimed on Wednesday that the Hoops had joined the race to sign the 19-year-old striker, who scored a stunning 26 goals whilst on loan at Bristol City last season.

Brendan Rodgers has already made one summer purchase, spending £1.3million to land Aberdeen winger Jonny Hayes, but Boyd believes he should turn his attention back to the loan market.

He told the Scottish Sun: “I would have no problem if Celtic continued to go down the loan route.

“It’s the financial side of things. You can’t sign a player like Patrick Roberts with the fee and wages that come with him. So to use the loan system is great – if the players come in do what you expect.

“Patrick Roberts certainly did that. If you can get players in like that to help then great. There is nothing wrong with that.”

Rodgers is currently looking to strengthen his first-team squad ahead of the upcoming campaign, where they will be a mounting a defence of their domestic treble.

The Hoops will also be competing for a place in the Champions League, with their qualifying campaign set to begin against Northern Irish side Linfield next month.

Meanwhile, Celtic can also look to extend their unbeaten record having gone the entire domestic campaign last term without tasting defeat.
