Trevor Carson delivers verdict on Celtic stopper Gordon

Motherwell new recruit Trevor Carson claims Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon is one of the “best players” he has ever worked with.

The Scottish club confirmed on their official website on Tuesday that they had signed Carson from Hartlepool on a three-year-deal, which will be his first experience north of the border.

The 29-year-old stopper will now regularly go up against one of his former Sunderland team-mates in Celtic’s Gordon, from whom Carson insists that he has learned a great deal.

Gordon moved to the Stadium of Light from Hearts in a £9million deal in 2007, then a British transfer record fee for a goalkeeper, and played alongside Carson until 2012.

But despite Carson failing to make a single first-team appearance for the Black Cats, he insists his time at Sunderland was valuable due to the experience of playing alongside the current Hoops star.

Speaking to the Evening Times, he gave a glowing verdict of Gordon: “I speak to him quite regularly. He’s one of the best I’ve ever worked with and I learned so much from him.

“It’ll be surreal to come up against him but it would be a fantastic experience. You could see from his first training session that he was worth every penny they’d paid for him and it was a lot of money at the time.

“I saw how good he was first-hand. He got unfair criticism. He didn’t get the credit he deserved down there. The fee probably went against him.”

Gordon suffered a series of devastating long-term injury setbacks during the latter part of his Sunderland career, which saw him take a brief hiatus from the game.

He worked hard on his fitness during his two-year absence, and was rewarded with a two-year contract by Celtic in July 2014, where he has since become one of their most consistent performers.

The Scotland international kept 28 clean sheets from 55 appearances in all competitions during the 2016-17 season, as Celtic went unbeaten in domestic competitions and lifted the Scottish treble.

He has now kept an incredible overall 77 shut-outs from 159 appearances for the Scottish club since his arrival.

Gordon is currently on international duty with the Scotland national side, and could win his 47th cap if picked to face England in a World Cup qualifier on Saturday.
