Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has claimed Scott Brown would not have had the same influence at a big club in England as he has had at Celtic.

Brown led his club to a historic treble this season, as he lifted the Scottish Premiership trophy, as well as the Scottish Cup and the Scottish League Cup.

The 31-year-old played a huge part in all three successes, playing 54 league and cup games this term, scoring three goals and providing three assists.

However, Scholes believes he would not have had the same influence if he were plying his trade for an English club.

He told the Daily Record: “Scott is in the right place. He’s a real leader. [He] has had a fantastic career with Celtic.

“I’ve watched him over the years in the Celtic team but it’s hard to gauge the level of the Scottish game compared to down here.

“But could he have done the same with a big club down in England? I’m not sure he’d have had the same influence.”

Brown has been at Parkhead since the summer of 2007 when he completed a £4.4million move from Hibernian and he has since become a real fan favourite.

He has made more than 400 appearances in all competitions for the Bhoys, scoring 37 goals, and he has been a part of seven Scottish Premiership winning teams.

The 31-year-old has also been a key player for Scotland in recent years, and he has been capped 52 times since his debut in a 1-1 friendly draw with USA in November 2005.

Scholes spent his whole career with Premier League giants Manchester United, playing more than 700 league and cup games and winning every honour available to him.
