Celtic defender Eoghan O’Connell is on the verge of joining English club Bury, according to HITC.

The sports website claim the centre-back, 21, is set to agree terms with the League One outfit and join on a free transfer when his Parkhead contract expires at the end of the month.

HITC report that O’Connell has decided to leave Celtic in search of regular first-team football after struggling for game time at the club he joined as a 15-year-old in 2011.

The Republic of Ireland Under-21 international played seven games for Brendan Rodgers’ side in the early months of the 2016-17 campaign, including a Champions League group game against Barcelona, before he joined another League One side Walsall on loan in the January transfer window.

O’Connell made 17 appearances during his loan stint at Walsall as he demonstrated the potential that yielded him 13 first-team Celtic appearances.

Bury, who are managed by ex-Motherwell boss Lee Clark, have reportedly been impressed enough by the young defender to make him their latest addition in what is shaping up to be a busy summer in the transfer market.

O’Connell is tipped for big things at club and international level, and has already accumulated four Republic of Ireland Under-21 caps.
