Alex Rae has praised Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha for reinforcing the team’s defence with new signings in the summer transfer window.

The Gers have already been very busy this summer as they have confirmed the signings of defenders Bruno Alves from Cagliari and Ryan Jack from fellow SPL rivals Aberdeen.

The Daily Record also recently reported that the club are on the brink of securing the signature of Vitoria defender Fabio Cardoso who has arrived to undergo a medical at Ibrox.

Speaking with the Evening Times, Rae was full of praise for the Rangers boss as he felt that he has identified the team’s weakness and he is bringing the right type of players to the club.

“I felt that right through the spine of the team they needed a wee bit of steel,” he said.

“They have brought Bruno Alves in, they look as if they will bring in Cardoso too, and it looks like Carlos Pena will come in to compliment Ryan Jack in midfield.

“He’s had a couple of months to get used to his surroundings, and he has took on board a lot of information, and he’s identified these issues.

“It looks as though the board are starting to find some money to support his tenure at the club, and help him to achieve the aim of strengthening the spine of the team.”

Rangers endured a very tough campaign in their first season back in the Scottish top flight since 2012, finishing in third place and 39 points behind fierce rivals Celtic.

The men from Ibrox conceded a total of 45 league goals – the worst defensive record amongst the teams who finished in the top three.

The Gers also suffered some humiliating defeats throughout the league campaign including a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Hearts at the beginning of February and an embarrassing 5-1 loss at home in the Old Firm derby at the end of April.
