Ex-Ibrox midfielder Kevin Thomson believes Rangers have kicked off a key summer recruitment drive in fine fashion with the signing of Bruno Alves.

The 35-year-old centre-back arrived at Ibrox from Italian side Cagliari on a two-year deal on Wednesday, becoming the first signing of the Pedro Caixinha era at the Scottish club.

But Rangers unveiled their second summer signing less than 24 hours later, with Aberdeen midfielder Ryan Jack completing his free transfer to the club on Wednesday.

Caixinha won’t stop there, however, with a host of players expected to follow in the next couple of weeks, although the transfers won’t official go through until the window opens on July 1.

Scotland international midfielder Graham Dorrans is another name that has emerged on Caixinha’s wishlist, and ex-Rangers midfielder Thomson believes that the Portuguese has made a “good start” with his recruitment, a process which will be key this summer.

He told the Scottish Sun: “The recruitment is going to be key and they have got off to a good start with Alves. His career speaks volumes and you don’t need me to tell you he is a good player.

“In Jack and Dorrans it looks like Caixinha is trying to get the spine of the team. That is really important as these boys are going to have to compete with the ones across the road.

“I am a big fan of both of them. I am sure it will be a challenge that the Celtic boys will relish and it needs to be one that the Rangers boys will relish as well.”

The Daily Record claimed on Thursday that Mexico international midfielder Carlos Pena had flown to Glasgow to an undergo a medical exam.

It is also stated that Rangers have agreed a fee with Pena’s current employers Guadalajara, which suggests that he could imminently become the club’s third signing.

The flurry of transfer activity in Glasgow comes as little surprise after Caixinha was forced to wait several months before being granted the opportunity to make his own changes to the squad he inherited from his predecessor Mark Warburton.
