Former manager Jimmy Calderwood has backed Rangers new recruit Ryan Jack to impress if handed his competitive debut this week.

The 25-year-old midfielder became the second of eight confirmed new signings this summer, having joined from rivals Aberdeen on a free transfer.

He could be set to make his competitive debut for the club on Thursday night, when Rangers host Progres Niederkorn in the Europa League first-qualifying round at Ibrox.

Jack had a brief taste of European football with Aberdeen during the 2016-17 season, playing every minute of their six qualifying games as they lost out to NK Maribor in the third-qualifying round.

But Jack has been granted another shot at reaching the Europa League group-stage with Rangers this term, and Calderwood believes he will relish the occasion.

He told the Evening Times: “I think he will love it and I’m sure he can’t wait to get out there on Thursday night. Nights like that is probably one of the reasons why he went down the road.

“He is a winner and he will relish it. He is a leader, a really good lad and good fun as well so he will be good in the dressing room. I can’t speak highly enough of him.

“He is a very good player, hard as nails, a good passer of the ball and he loves playing football. I think he will do really well for Rangers.”

Five more of Rangers’ summer recruits could also be set to make their debuts for the club, with Fabio Cardoso, Alfredo Morelos, Carlos Pena, Eduardo Herrera and Dalcio also set to be at Caixinha’s disposal.

Neither Bruno Alves or Daniel Candeias, however, are likely to feature, with Alves currently on international duty with Portugal at the Confederations Cup, and Candeias unable to play a part due to red tape.

The Daily Record report that the Portuguese winger cannot feature for his new club until July 1, when his registration as a player is released by his previous club, Alanyaspor.

Rangers travel to Luxembourg for the second-leg of their Europa League first-qualifying round clash on July 4.
