Sky Sports pundit Ray Wilkins believes Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy would have a lot of people knocking on his door asking for a pay rise if they signed Antoine Griezmann.
The 26-year-old Athletico Madrid striker is one of the most sought after players in the world, having once again impressed for his La Liga team.
Griezmann scored 26 goals in all competitions this term, including six strikes in 12 Champions League matches and a further 16 hits in the league.
By contrast, Spurs’ top scorer was England international Harry Kane, who found the back of the net on 29 occasions during his 30 Premier League games.
Former Chelsea assistant Wilkins believes Griezmann would be a top addition for Mauricio Pochettinio’s side as he stated what would happen if they did sign the Madrid player.
“They need to spend in a forward position because if Harry Kane gets injured, they’re going to struggle,” Wilkins told Sky Sports, as quoted by the Express.
“Wouldn’t Tottenham look wonderful with (Hugo) Lloris, that back three of (Eric) Dier, (Jan) Vertonghen, (Toby) Alderweireld, (Danny) Rose on the left, (Kyle) Walker on the right, (Victor) Wanyama and (Mousa) Dembele, Dele, Griezmann, Harry Kane?
“Defensively you’re sound, I don’t hear any noise from Tottenham that they’re going in for somebody but a Griezmann signing would be something very special.
“I know it goes beyond their pay structure and Mr (Daniel) Levy would have a lot of people rapping on his door asking for rises.”
Tottenham chairman Levy has a strict wage structure at the north London club and given the calibre of player Griezmann is, he would go for a big transfer fee and more than likely demand a big wage.
As a result, this could result in other Spurs players asking for pay rises after they helped their team secure another place in next season’s Champions League.
Pochettino’s side recently concluded the campaign by finishing runners-up to champions Chelsea, but despite their rivals success, many were still impressed with the manner in which Tottenham performed.
