West Ham are set to make RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner their number one transfer target this summer, according to a reliable journalist.

Gazzetto Dello Sport reporter Emanuele Giulianelli claims the Hammers are ready to make a huge £21.7million offer to sign the 21-year-old attacker, who has inspired his side in defying pre-season expectations to finish second in the Bundesliga.

The Italian journalist claimed on his personal Twitter account that Werner is West Ham’s transfer priority ahead of the summer window, but are yet to formally submit an offer for the one-time Germany international.

Werner was integral to Leipzig’s season, having a hand in 28 goals during his 32 league and cup appearances for the newly-promoted side who finished second in their first season after achieving top-flight status.

Scoring 21 goals, Leipzig’s number 11 also laid on a further seven assists in just his first season after joining the ambitious side from Stuttgart for £8.5million.

It is unclear if the Hammers can convince Leipzig to cash in on their in-form attacker, who has three years remaining on his current deal.

Slaven Bilic’s east London outfit are likely to be in the market for a new striker after failing to buy a forward that could provide the goals the Hammers need.

Summer signings Andre Ayew, Jonathan Calleri, Ashley Fletcher and Simone Zaza managed just eight goals between them, while Andy Carroll and Diafra Sakho watched from the sidelines for much of the season due to injury.

That could see Bilic move for Werner to finally end his hunt for a goal machine to fire the Hammers back into the half of the table next season.
