Spanish giants Valencia are lining up a bid in excess of £30million for Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera, according to a Mirror report.

The newspaper claims the club’s coach, Marcelino, is a “huge admirer” of the 27-year-old midfield battler, and knows him well having worked with him at Real Zaragoza in the past.

It is said Marcelino has asked Valencia’s owner, Peter Lim, to stump up the funds to sign him in this summer transfer window.

However, the Mirror claims “sources close to Valencia” say the Manchester giants have turned down their enquiry about the Spaniard, and want to hold onto him.

It is unknown whether the Spanish club is planning an improved offer.

Herrera was a mainstay of United’s midfield this term, making 50 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals and providing 11 assists.

He joined the Old Trafford club from Athletic Bilbao in the summer of 2014 for £30million, and has since played more than 120 league and cup games for the club.

The 27-year-old began his career at Zaragoza, where he worked with Marcelino, before making the switch to Bilbao in 2011.

The combative central midfielder has been capped by Spain on two occasions, making his debut in a 2-2 friendly draw with England in November of last year.

United finished sixth in this season’s Premier League, but they did win a League Cup and Europa League double, qualifying for the Champions League in the process.
