Tottenham first-teamer Jan Vertonghen believes it is essential that the club retain the services of their top players this summer.

Tottenham finished second in the Premier League, securing a top-four finish and qualification for the Champions League group-stage for the second successive campaign under Mauricio Pochettino.

But the stunning form of a number of their prized assets have alerted a number of their Premier League and European rivals ahead of the summer transfer window, which opens on July 1.

The likes of Eric Dier, Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, Danny Rose and Kyle Walker have all been linked with a move away from the club, with Walker reportedly destined to complete a move this month.

It had been reported by the Daily Star on Monday that Manchester City were “closing in” on the Tottenham full-back, and that a deal could be completed by the end of the month.

But Vertonghen insists that Tottenham have the “strength” and “power” to fend off interest in their top performers, and hoped his teammates will all be playing together at Wembley next term.

He told Sky Sports: “These guys are important to us, this season, and for a couple of seasons now. I think Tottenham has the strength and power to keep guys like that in the team.

“I really hope they all stay and we can all push together for something very nice next season.”

Pochettino showed significant intent over the course of the season by tying a number of his key players down to new long-term contracts, including Vertonghen, Alli, and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

But the contracts could mean nothing if Tottenham can’t match their intent with silverware, with the possibility of winning titles elsewhere likely to lure one or two away in the next few years.
