Schalke and Germany playmaker Max Meyer has opened up about his future at the club after turning down a contract extension at the start of June.

The 21-year-old attacking midfielder is contracted at Schalke until the summer of 2018, putting a number of clubs on alert in the hopes of securing a cut-price deal for the four-time-capped German international.

One such club is English side Tottenham, who Meyer confirmed made a move for him in the summer of 2016 in an interview with German newspaper Bild back in November 2016.

Any prospective buyers’ hopes of securing a deal for the versatile forward would have been boosted after the player told the same publication at the start of June that he had turned down a contract extension offered to him by the Bundesliga side.

Currently on duty with the German U21 side for the European Championships in Poland, Meyer has opened up about the potential of a transfer this summer.

He told German sports magazine Kicker on their website: “I did not say that I would leave Schalke, but only that I did not renew my contract.

“(I) will take things as they come.”

Meyer failed to set the Bundesliga alight last season, with just one goal and three assists in 27 league appearances for Schalke.

However, he impressed in the German U21’s opening match against the Czech Republic on Sunday, as he scored the opening goal on the way to a 2-0 win.
