Tottenham have made a move to sign Swansea centre-back Alfie Mawson after being priced out of landing Harry Maguire, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claim that Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino has “been in touch” with the Welsh club about a potential deal for the 23-year-old.

Sun report that Tottenham will make a £15million bid for Mawson, whose value has trebled following a fine debut season since his £5million transfer from Barnsley 12 months ago.

It is said that Pochettino regards the former England Under-21 international as a squad player for next season with the potential to be a first-team regular of the future.

The report details that the Spurs manager wants to sign a centre-back who is comfortable with their possession-based playing style and has the calibre to be a long-term replacement for Toby Alderweireld, whose future is up in the air due to a contract stalemate.

Mawson is currently on duty with England at the Under-21s European Championships and played the full 90 minutes of the team’s goalless draw against Sweden on Friday.

Tottenham have turned their attention to Mawson after losing out to Leicester in the race to sign Harry Maguire.

The 2015-16 Premier League champions announced in midweek that they had landed the defender from Hull for £17million.
