Sky Sports pundit Peter Taylor believes Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli produced an average display during England’s 3-2 defeat against France on Tuesday.

The former England assistant claimed that the attacking midfielder, who played the full match, didn’t show the energy he normally shows during matches.

Gareth Southgate’s side, who recorded a 2-2 draw against rivals Scotland three days earlier, were beaten by ten-man France during the international friendly in Paris.

Spurs striker Harry Kane opened the scoring for his home country after nine minutes but the Three Lions were behind at half-time after Samuel Umtiti and Djibril Sidibe had put the home side ahead.

Moments after the break, defender Raphael Varane was shown a red card after bringing down Alli in the penalty area with Kane converting the spot kick.

Despite having the advantage in numbers on the field of play, Southgate’s team were behind with 12 minutes left on the clock with winger Ousmane Dembélé finishing off a flowing move.

Following his performance for England against France, Taylor explained why he had given Alli a seven out of ten.

“He’s got good legs, and has spoiled us over the season,” Taylor told Sky Sports. “Tonight was probably an average game for him. I don’t think he showed the energy he usually does.”

Alli started both of England international matches in June but the Spurs man was unable to find the back of the net for his side.

During his international career, he has played 18 games for his home country, scoring two goals and supplying two assists.

The PFA Young Player of the Year recently ended the Premier League season by scoring 18 goals and supplying nine assists for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
