Martin Keown believes that Tottenham striker Harry Kane should be given the England captaincy for the foreseeable future.

The 23-year-old captained the England national team for the first time in the World Cup qualifying 2-2 draw against Scotland at Hampden Park last weekend.

The Spurs man turned out to be the hero on the day as he rescued a point for his country with a dramatic last-minute equaliser.

Kane has now scored seven goals for the national team since making his international debut in 2015.

The result means that England remain at the top of Group F with a two point advantage over second-placed Slovakia.

Writing in his column for the Daily Mail, the former Arsenal defender is convinced that Kane is the perfect candidate to replace Wayne Rooney and captain his country in the long-term.

“Harry Kane would be the safest pair of hands to entrust with the England captaincy in the long run,” he said.

“I can understand why Southgate is not rushing to name a permanent captain as he wants a team full of leaders.

“But it looks like Kane will be the first-choice striker for the foreseeable future and the 23-year-old would be a good fit for the captaincy.”

The Englishman has enjoyed another fantastic campaign as he made 38 appearances in all competitions last season and contributed with 35 goals and seven assists for Spurs last season.

Kane also picked up the Premier League Golden Boot for the second consecutive season as he notched up a total of 29 goals.

The Spurs striker is set to captain the national team for the second game in a row as England face France in the Stade de France in a friendly match on Tuesday night.
