Xherdan Shaqiri believes the Stoke City board “must strengthen” during the summer transfer window if they are to be successful next season.

The 25-year-old moved to the Bet365 Stadium in 2015 when Mark Hughes’ side paid £14million for his services to Italian giants Inter Milan.

During his time at the club, he has produced mixed performances and has been criticised for his inconsistencies for Hughes’ team.

Stoke, who have claimed top-ten finishes in the last few seasons, recently finished the campaign in 13th place where they recorded 44 points from their 38 matches.

Despite a poor campaign overall, Shaqiri is still hoping his side can reach the Champions League and possibly go further.

“I’m trying to get the club to the top as leader. But I also want to play for titles again and be in the Champions League,” Shaqari told the Sun. “We were up and down as a team this season. Now we want to attack again in the summer.

“The board must strengthen – other clubs will also be doing it. Can Stoke do a Leicester? Yes, I think this is possible.”

Over the course of the season, Shaqiri played 22 games in all competitions for Hughes’ side, scoring four goals added with his two assists.

Various injuries throughout the campaign did result in him missing a number of Premier League matches for Stoke, who finished off the season with a 1-0 win at Southampton.

Nonetheless, during his career, Shaqiri has played for the likes of Bayern Munich, Inter, FC Basel, as well as representing Switzerland on the international stage.

For Bayern, he played 81 matches in all competitions for the German giants, winning the Champions League and three titles in the process.
