Turkish giants Fenerbahce are weighing up a summer swoop for Newcastle flop Matz Sels, according to a Chronicle report.

The newspaper claims the 25-year-old goalkeeper has been made available for transfer by Magpies manager Rafa Benitez, after he failed to impress in the 2016-17 campaign.

It is said Fenerbahce are interested in a season-long loan deal for Sels with an option to buy, but Newcastle want to recoup at least a portion of the £5.5million fee they paid for him last summer.

The report also states several Belgian clubs have approached the Toon over a move for the 25-year-old, but his high wage demands are an issue.

Tim Krul will return to St James’ Park at the beginning of next month, and Benitez will allow Sels to leave as a result.

This comes after the Sun reported that the Spanish boss was keen to offload the Belgian shot-stopper this summer, and replace him with West Ham’s Adrian or Napoli’s Pepe Reina.

Sels began his career in the North East promisingly, starting all nine of Newcastle’s nine Championship matches.

However, soon a loss of form saw him dropped and Karl Darlow was preferred for the rest of the campaign, and come the end of the season Sels had only made 14 appearances in all competitions.

The goalkeeper was capped by Beligum Under-21s four times in his youth, but he is yet to make his full international debut.
