Newcastle United are closing in on the signing of Chelsea attacker Tammy Abraham on a season-long loan deal, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper report that the Magpies are on the verge of completing a deal for the 19-year-old, and that the transfer “is expected to be tied up this weekend.”

Abraham was in stunning form during a loan spell at Championship outfit Bristol City last season, where he scored 26 goals from 48 appearances in all competitions.

His form has caught the eye of a number of suitors, but Chelsea are only prepared to let him leave on loan as they seek to hand him an important role in the first-team squad.

Premier League rivals Brighton and Leicester City have both shown an interest in a potential deal, but it appears that Newcastle are set to win the race for the signature of the highly-rated goalscorer.

Magpies chief Rafa Benitez travelled to St. George’s Park, the home of the English FA, on his wedding anniversary to sell a move to Tyneside to the England Under 21 international.

His efforts could well have swung a move in Newcastle’s favour, after it had earlier been revealed by the Mail that Brighton held the advantage in the race to sign Abraham.

If a deal is completed this week, the Chelsea attacker could become Newcastle’s second summer signing, following the arrival of winger Christian Atsu, who also arrives from Stamford Bridge.
