Newcastle eye Griffiths swoop

Newcastle United are weighing up a swoop for Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths on the back of his stunning Scotland exploits, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper claim that the north-east giants and Premier League rivals West Brom are both keen on signing the 26-year-old.

The Mirror report that Celtic could be tempted into selling the forward for around £6million this summer if either club make a move.

It is said that both English clubs are looking to bolster their frontline and have interest in signing Griffiths, who ended the 2016-17 campaign on a high with goals for club and country.

Griffiths announced himself on the international stage for Scotland on Saturday as he scored two stunning last-gasp free-kicks to help his side come back from the dead to secure a 2-2 draw against rivals England.

Griffiths has been demoted behind Moussa Dembele in the Celtic pecking order this season and has been publicly criticised by manager Brendan Rodgers for his attitude and lifestyle.

Nevertheless, he has an outstanding scoring record for Celtic, netting 18 times in 37 matches in the recently completed domestic season following his incredible 40-goal haul from 51 games in 2015-16.

In total for Celtic, the Scot has scored 84 goals in 144 appearances, and even this season his goals have come at the extremely impressive rate of one every 109 minutes.

Griffiths was at Wolves from the summer of 2011 until January 2014 but he spent two of those campaigns on loan at Hibernian, where he scored 38 goals in 78 matches.

In 160 appearances for his different clubs in the Scottish Premiership alone, Griffiths has managed to return 93 goals and Newcastle may be looking at the goal machine to add more firepower to an attack that was spearheaded so impressively by Dwight Gayle as they stormed to the Championship title..

The Scotland striker’s contract at Celtic runs until the summer of 2021.
