Dutch side FC Twente have confirmed they have captured 24-year-old Slovenian midfielder Haris Vuckic on a free transfer from Newcastle.

The attack minded central midfielder was available as a free agent after his contract expired at the Tyneside club, having been with the Magpies since January 2009, and has signed a three year deal with the Dutch club.

Twente confirmed the transfer on their official Twitter account, providing more details on the club website:

The one-time-capped Slovenian international was tipped to become a star player as a youngster, having reportedly being pursued by European giants AC Milan and Real Madrid while at Slovenian side NK Domzale, but a series of serious injuries curtailed his development following his move to St James’ Park.

He managed to notch up just 19 appearances during his 8 years in the North East, scoring just one goal, a memorable long range strike against Atromitos in the Europa League which secured the Magpies’ qualification to the group stages.

Vuckic found himself farmed out on loan for much of his Newcastle career, as he looked to find playing time at lower league sides such as Cardiff, Rotherham, Wigan and Bradford City, as well as Scottish Premiership side Rangers.

He was one of four senior players who Newcastle announced at the start of June that they would be releasing on free contracts, alongside Dutch utility man Vurnon Anita, winger Sammy Ameobi and young Slovakian defender Lubomir Satka.
