The 29-year-old central defender was an absolute colossus for Villarreal last season.

He played 36 matches in all competitions throughout the entire campaign and he was one of the main reasons why the Yellow Submarine had the second best defensive record in La Liga behind Atletico Madrid.

The Spaniard was unable to finish the season as he picked up an ankle injury but with a good rest over the summer break, he would be a fantastic addition to St James’ Park next season.

The defender’s contract at Villarreal ends in 2019 so Newcastle would not need to splash the cash in order to acquire his services.
